How to Conserve Printer Ink and Toner

Printer ink is one of the most expensive liquids money can buy. At $4,285 per liter, it is more expensive than champagne, gasoline, and even fancy perfume! If your organization is running through this precious liquid at an expensive pace, there are steps you can take to reduce the cost.

Printer Ink Consumption and Cost

Use the font Garamond instead of Times New Roman

It seems like font choice is nothing more than a design decision. However, it really does have an effect on the amount of ink consumed. 14-year-old student Suvir Mirchandani conducted a science project in which he discovered that if documents were printed using the font Garamond instead of Times New Roman, ink consumption was reduced by 24%. He calculated that his school could save thousands, and the government could save millions, by making this simple change!

Print Internal Documents on Draft Mode

After clicking print, a screen with options usually pops up. Instead of just clicking “OK,” click “properties.” Change the print mode to “draft.” What this does is prints your document using less ink. It will be lighter and not as sharp, but will save your ink. Always use the draft mode unless the document is something that will be presented to someone else or displayed. Anything you are printing just for yourself, for reference, or for back-up, should be printed in this mode to save ink and toner.

Adjust Formatting

If you are printing a text document, there are some formatting options you can use to conserve ink, and conserve paper. Choose a font that uses less ink, such as Garamond. Use a small font size, and avoid using bold type. To conserve paper, change the margins to as narrow as possible, and make the document single-spaced to save paper. If you just need part of a document, highlight it and click “print selection” instead of printing the whole document.

Utilize Technology

If you need a document in multiple places, use cloud storage or flash drives to save it for use wherever you are, rather than printing it. Send as much as you can by email instead of hard copy. Do not print emails unless absolutely necessary. Use smartphone apps to do tasks that might otherwise require paper and printer ink. For example, SunDANCE has a mobile app that allows you to access, list, and purchase your office supplies right from your phone!

Choose Printers and Cartridges Wisely

When shopping for a printer, consider the price of ink in your decision. Furthermore, consider remanufactured cartridges. They are better for the environment, cost less money, and are equal to or better than the more expensive brands.

Remanufactured Cartridges

8 Things You Need to Know about Remanufactured Cartridges

Ink and toner cartridges are an expensive, and important, part of an office supply budget. Consider switching to Innovera remanufactured cartridges instead of the OEM (original equipment manufacturer’s) brand to save money, help protect the environment, and still get the same quality. Innovera ink and toner cartridges are a wise choice for many reasons. Here are eight of them:

1. They will not void a printer’s warranty.

It is a common misconception that using any cartridge other than the original equipment manufacturer’s brand will void the printer’s warranty. This is not true. Consumers have the right to use a different brand of cartridge without voiding the printer’s warranty. It is actually illegal under federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) to void a warranty for using a different cartridge.

2. All remanufactured cartridges are not the same.

Cartridges by Innovera are not the same as other remanufactured cartridges. Innovera assures quality through state-of-the-art research and development, engineering, and ISO-certified manufacturing processes. Each cartridge is 100% post-tested. Innovera cartridges have a defect rate below .5% which is significantly lower than the industry average.

3. Remanufactured cartidges have improved over the years.

Remanufactured cartridges may have had a bad reputation in the past. However, Innovera cartridges are remanufactured by the largest remanufacturer and collector of empty cartridges in the industry. Innovera uses highly automated processes and robotics to produce a quality cartridge that exceeds the quality of the cartridges of the past.

4. Innovera cartridges are 100% guaranteed.

An Innovera cartridge will meet or exceed the page yield of the original equipment manufacturer’s yield. It will not harm a printer or void a warranty. If for some reason it doesn’t meet the page yield or is defective, Innovera will replace the cartridge and/or send out a technician within a day to repair the issue.

5. Innovera cartridges will print as much as the OEM cartridges.

The printer manufacturers calculate page yield on 5% ink coverage. 5% ink is roughly a paragraph of text. Therefore, if an OEM cartridge says it yields up to 10,000 pages, that may not be accurate for everyone as most documents are more than a paragraph of plain text per page. The Innovera cartridges will meet or exceed the yield of the OEM cartridge based on the same calculations. This can be tested on most printers by printing a print supply status page each time you replace a cartridge. Check printer instructions or the printer manufacturer’s website to learn how to do this.

6. Remanufactured cartridges are “Green”

It is estimated that 500 million cartridges are produced each year. If all of these are simply thrown in the trash, they will fill 4 million cubic feet of landfill space. The remanufacturing process saves energy and eliminates the need for non-renewable resources to breakdown plastic and metal. When a cartridge is remanufactured, it is re-used. Once empty cartridges are collected, they are inspected, cleaned and rebuilt, saving the used cartridge from the landfill.

7. Remanufactured cartridges save money

A remanufactured cartridge is not only good for the environment, but it is also good for the office supply budget, saving 25% to over 50% depending on the comparable brand.

Remanufactured Cartridges

8. Remanufactured cartridges are not the same as “compatible”

A compatible cartridge is one that is made brand new to be similar to the OEM cartridge. These are often made in China and are not up to the same quality standards as the OEM. Remanufactured cartridges recycle the original cartridge, saving landfill space and using the same quality standards as the original.
