Our time at St. Jude

Some members of our team here at SunDANCE recently had the unique and amazing experience of traveling to St. Jude Children’s Medical Hospital for a day to learn about the hospital and all of the inspirational things happening there. We were able to spend time playing games and making arts and crafts with some of the brave kiddos that are currently living and receiving treatment at St. Jude.

So much effort is made to ensure the experience at St. Jude is unlike any other hospital. The halls and rooms are void of that common “hospital smell” and the walls are covered in fun and colorful murals.

Possibly the most emotional moment of the trip came when walking by the ABCs of Cancer where patients write about their journey through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Across from the ABCs is the KAY KAFE where patients and their families are able to go to eat world class food without having to spend a dime. Story after story about the the care and personalization of the food shows the great lengths the hospital goes to ensuring these children and their families are comfortable.

Later in the day after our tour, we spent time at the Target House where patients live while undergoing treatment. We all got pretty good at making paper air planes by the end, although I’m pretty sure Gavin’s flew the farthest!

After shooting pool, playing cards and singing karaoke it was time to leave and say goodbye to these brave kids. The experience was unforgettable and we all came away with admiration for the hospital for all that it provides for these families in need. Help us raise money for St. Jude this October-December, 2014 by purchasing Hammermill paper. Happy Left Handers Day!

Sure, lefties make up about 10 percent of the population — but, frankly, it seems like society has forgotten about them. Right-handed gadgets, awkwardly designed desks, cooking tools that fit comfortably in your right hand, Left Hander’s certainly earned the right to have a day dedicated to them. August 13th is that day. So take a minute to appreciate your left handed friends and loved ones. To celebrate we thought we would share some fun Left Hander’s Trivia and Facts!

Lefties are also called “southpaws”. The term was coined in baseball to describe a left handed pitcher.
International Left Hander’s Day was first celebrated on August 13, 1976. It was started by Lefthander’s International.
During the 1600’s people, thought left handers were witches and warlocks.
According to research published in the American Journal of Psychology, there is some evidence that left-handed people have the upper hand in at least one creative facet — they’re better at divergent thinking, a method of idea generation that explores many possible solutions.
President Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford are all left-handed. Herbert Hoover is believed to be the first left-handed president.
Lefties make especially good baseball players, tennis players, swimmers, boxers and fencers.
Mothers over 40 are twice as likely to have a left-handed baby.
Approximately 10% of all humans are left-handed. BUT 50% of CATS are left handed.
Research has shown connections between the right and left sides of the brain are faster in left-handed people.

Street CReD is an annual event that focuses on community redevelopment in a specific neighborhood each year by showing what Tulsa can become when it creates the change it wants to see. Our mantra: When no area of Tulsa is neglected, the entire city benefits.

Get ready for a celebration of all things walkable and bikeable downtown, as one of TYPros’ largest and most impactful events of the year returns in May with an Open Streets event that will temporarily close a mile of streets in southern downtown for use by pedestrians and bicyclists.

We need partners to help us create a festival-like atmosphere along the route. Nonprofit organizations can host “activity stops” with almost any activity — as long as it’s designed to get people out of their cars and onto their feet. Going GREEN!

Going GREEN should not be hard and the team at SunDANCE is here to help! Try some of these GREEN tips.

1. Printing

Printers are one of the most used office items and represents an area where we can make a significant difference by printing smarter. Try using a multifunction device, this is a combination printer/scanner/copier in one machine and if it is Energy Star rated, it can save both energy and space.

2. Recycle

Many items in your office can be recycled. If you do not have a recycling station at work you can start one up! All you need is a few bins, and an understanding of your local recycling rules. Some of them may include recycling:

Paper products like copy paper, envelopes, magazines, etc.
Most shipping supplies
Soda cans
Plastic
Ink cartridges
Toner cartridges

3. Paper

Easy Wardrobe Fixes Using Office Supplies

I came across and interesting article on Kaboodle today about easy wardrobe fixes with office supplies (my favorite subject of course!) and thought I would share the knowledge!

Lose a button on your shirt? Let Double-Sided Tape do the work until you can get it fixed!

Stuck Zipper? Don’t waste time battling with it, instead color it with a Wooden Pencil, which will help lubricate the track so you can easily slide the zipper up or down.

Don’t you hate when you get your nails done and the very next day you chip that pretty french manicure? Use White-Out or Liquid Paper to make your manicure look like you just stepped out of the nail salon.

Bad hair day, we have all been there, use Paper Clips as bobby pins for an emergency up-do or to pin back unruly bangs.

It is not a good day when you are working and your bra strap breaks. Hone in on your MacGyver skills and tie one end of the strap to a Paper Clip or Book Ring and hook the metal part to the base of your bra.

You look down at your pants and notice that one leg is longer than the other. Not your actual leg, your pant leg.If you find that the hem has come undone in one of your pant legs, just reach for your Stapler as a quick fix. Just fold the pant leg to your desired length and staple the hem… just make sure to be careful when you’re removing the staples later!

Scuffed shoe or exposed stiletto? Few things are as annoying as trying to walk in high heels that are missing the rubber or plastic covering of heel base. Prevent a slip by inserting the heel into a thick Eraser or gluing a slim slice of a pencil-top eraser to the exposed metal until you make it to the cobbler. Use a Sharpie to fix a scuffed shoe and make look like new.

We all dislike wardrobe malfunctions, but we hope with these tips the next time one appears, you will be ready!

Happy April Fool’s Day!

For any of you merry pranksters in the office, here are some classic ideas for April Fools day! April Fool’s is also a day dreaded by many in the office because everyone thinks they will have a joke played on them. Be bold on this day of fun and prank someone in your office! These are ideas that would take a ton of time to clean up, but the look on the face of the person being April Fooled would be priceless. It also would be fun to have people guess in the office how many balloons are in the room!

Do you have a box of rubber bands sitting around the office? This takes the term tied up on the phone to a new level!

Who would ever think a keyboard prank would be so much fun! You can move the letters around to trick someone when they have to type something or you can put a damp paper towel underneath the keys and sprinkle some seeds!

Keep it simple and fun! April fools day with suckers!
